Winston Raval

Few pianists I have ever heard can match this cat for sheer power and stamina.  Maybe Oscar Peterson or Keith Jarrett could keep up with him, but I know of few others who can.  The first time I heard him play, I was simply amazed.  I’d be listening closely and following along, then think, “OK.  He’s gonna go this way, and do that variation…” when suddenly he goes someplace completely unexpected.  He lays down a riff that is so creatively delightful, that I’ve never heard before, and yet is so perfect in nuance and novelty I can’t help but say to myself, “Wow man, now that’s jazz!”  And that’s how Winston always plays.  Whether it’s mellow bossa, spicy salsa, frantic be-bop, soulful ballads – his style is unique and utterly delightful.
